Special Volume of "Biodiversity and Ecology" and World Metadatabase on Vegetation Databases

We plan to publish a conference volume in "Biodiversity and Ecology" (ISSN 1613-9801), an international, peer-reviewed journal, published at the Botanical Institute of the University of Hamburg. It will be both an attractive print publication (DIN A4 format, full colour, no page charges, widely distributed in central European libraries, sold as a monograph for a low price) and be permanently and freely available as e-publication on the internet.

This special volume (working title: "Vegetation Databases for the 21st Century") will be guest-edited by Jürgen Dengler, Jörg Ewald, Manfred Finckh, Florian Jansen, and Jens Oldeland. We plan to subdivide the volume into two parts:

(1) Ordinary papers based on talks and posters on the conference.

(2) Reports on existing vegetation databases.

With the second part of the special volume, we aim at providing a comprehensive overview of vegetation databases worldwide (as far as they are basically available to the public). The purpose of this attempt is fivefold:

  • Increasing the awareness about existing vegetation databases and bringing them together with potential users.
  • Avoiding that the same data are digitised more than once.
  • Compiling a world overview of existing databases.
  • Providing an adequate way for quoting databases in order to give appropriate credit to their originators.
  • Building the basis for a continuously updated online World Metadatabase on Vegetation Databases (for prototype, see http://geobot.botanik.uni-greifswald.de/portal/vegbank).

Each publication of the second part will consist of a standardised "fact sheet" (the template will be provided by us) and a short abstract as a minimum (like "data papers" in "Ecology"), but you could "expand" it to a full paper by adding further information on the database history and content as well as on analyses that have already been done with it.

The data provided for the fact sheets (+ optionally some more detailed information) will automatically be used to generate the World Metadatabase on Vegetation Databases, whose structure is presently been developed by a Steering Committee consisting of representatives of the NetPhyD-Section "Vegetation Databases", of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS) and of potential users. For more information and for a definition what kind of databases will be included, see here.

As our aim is to be as comprehensive as possible, we invite all hosts of any vegetation database worldwide to contribute at least a one-page description of it to the special issue on vegetation databases. Such articles can also be submitted by non-participants of the conference.

To get an idea how these one-page database reports will approximately look like, click here. As an example for a particulary well-done (and therefore highly cited) longer database paper, we refer you to Chytrý & Rafajová (2003). We editors plan to prepare a meta-analysis of all databases presented in the special volume and thus provide a timely update on previous overviews by Ewald (2001; Ber. R.-Tüxen-Ges. 13: 53–69) and Schaminée et al. (2009).

We additionally plan to publish the most outstanding conference contributions as a special feature of an ISI journal. Details will be announced later.

In order to allow us to plan the conference volume (and the World Metadatabase), please indicate below whether you plan to submit one or several papers. We will send instructions-to-authors and a template for the "fact sheet" to all registered potential authors during the next weeks. Please do not submit data or manuscripts before. Deadline for submission of papers is 31 March 2010.
